The main goal of the BISS Standards is to promote an efficient tool to identify sculptural works of art. While these standards do not provide authentication, nor certification of a sculptural work, they offer concise knowledge of the sculptural work which is identified as the material expression of the artist’s creation.

The BISS Standards have been conceived as a complementary tool to authentication certificates, catalogue raisonnés, and/or monographic studies. They provide an accurate labelling system that facilitates the identification of sculptural works, through the proposed labels as indicated below.

A 3D work created and approved by the artist in their lifetime, intended to be a study for a sculptural work. It may originate in a 2D model created and approved by the artist to be the specific design for the sculptural work. It may have been intended to be of ephemeral existence and its materiality may have been lost. 

A 3D work created and approved by the artist, in lifetime, intended to be the definite preparatory work for the sculptural work. It may originate in a 2D model created and approved by the artist to be the specific design for the sculptural work. It may have been intended to be of ephemeral existence and its materiality may have been lost.

A sculptural work created by the artist, in lifetime, conceived by hirself to be a single work. It may originate in a 3D study or model created and approved by the artist to be the specific preparatory work for the sculptural work. It may also originate in a 2D model created and approved by the artist to be the specific design for the sculptural work. This unique work has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist. 

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) are those approved in life by the artist. If existing, the foundry/maker mark corresponds to that authorised by the artist.

A sculptural work created by the artist, in lifetime, which is a variation of a previous authorised unique work by hirself. It has been conceived by the artist to be a single work. Under no circumstances may this variation have been executed after the death of the artist. This variation has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist. It may have been intended to be of ephemeral existence and its materiality may have been lost.  

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) are those approved in life by the artist. If existing, the foundry/maker mark corresponds to that authorised by the artist.

A sculptural work created by the artist, in lifetime, conceived by hirself to integrate a limited edition of maximum 8 casts plus 4EA. It may originate in a 3D study or model created and approved by the artist to be the specific preparatory work for the sculptural work. It may also originate in a 2D model created and approved by the artist to be the specific design for the sculptural work. This authorised work has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist. 

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) are those approved in life by the artist. If existing, the foundry/maker mark corresponds to that authorised by the artist and the numbering mark corresponds to one of the authorised casts of the edition.

A sculptural work created by the artist, in lifetime, conceived by hirself to integrate a limited edition of more than 8 casts plus 4EA or a not limited edition. It may originate in a 3D study or model created and approved by the artist to be the specific preparatory work of the sculptural work. It may also originate in a 2D model created and approved by the artist to be the specific design for the sculptural work. This authorised multiple been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist. 

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) are those approved in life by the artist. If existing, the foundry/maker mark corresponds to that authorised by the artist and the numbering mark corresponds to one of the authorised casts of the edition.

A sculptural work created by the artist, in lifetime, which is a variation over a cast that belongs to a limited or not limited edition ​​of a sculptural work created and approved by hirself. It has been conceived by the artist to be a single work. Under no circumstances may this authorised cast have been executed after the death of the artist. This authorised cast has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist. 

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) are those approved in life by the artist. If existing, the foundry/maker mark corresponds to that authorised by the artist and the numbering mark corresponds to one of the authorised casts of the edition.

A sculptural work executed after the death of the artist, conceived by the artist to be a single work or to integrate a limited edition of maximum 8 casts plus 4EA. It originates in a 3D model created and approved by the artist to be the specific preparatory work of the sculptural work. Under no circumstances may this posthumous work originate in a previous sculptural work created and approved by the artist or surmoulage. Nor in a 2D model created and approved by the artist to be the design for the sculpture or 3D work. Nor in 2D previous work created and approved by the artist. This posthumous work has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the rightsholder(s) and only upon the artist’s will.

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) are those approved in life by the artist. Under no circumstances may the later dimensions and materials be different. If existing, the numbering mark corresponds to one of the authorised casts of the edition and the foundry mark corresponds to that authorised by the artist. 

The authorization of the artist is mandatory to execute a posthumous work, and the rightsholder(s) should not proceed without this permission. 

A sculptural work created by the artist, in lifetime, intended to be of ephemeral existence and whose materiality has been lost.

A sculptural work created by the artist, in lifetime, intended for a one-specific location. It may have been intended to be of ephemeral existence and its materiality may have been lost.

A reinstallation of a previous sculptural work created and approved by the artist, in lifetime, with the original elements and materials. This reinstallation has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist or by the rightsholder(s).

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) are those approved in life by the artist.

A reinstallation of a previous sculptural work created and approved by the artist, in lifetime, with the original and/or with new elements and materials. This reinstallation has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist or by the rightsholder(s). 

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) may be other than those approved in life by the artist, only if authorised by the artist or rightsholder(s).  

A reinstallation of a previous sculptural work created and approved by the artist, in lifetime, with the original and/or with new elements and materials, in a different site from which it was first intended by the artist. It may have been intended to be of ephemeral existence and its materiality may have been lost. This reinstallation has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist or by the rightsholder(s). 

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) may be other than those approved in life by the artist, only if authorised by the artist or rightsholder(s).

A repair of a sculptural work created and approved by the artist, in lifetime, to ensure its protection after an injury or decay. This repair has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist or by the rightsholder(s). 

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) may be other than those approved in life by the artist, only when the sculptural work has been seriously damaged, and the alteration is unavoidable. 

A modification of a sculptural work created and approved by the artist, in lifetime, due to obsolescence, normative or security concerns. This modification has been authorised, overseen, and approved by the artist or the rightsholder(s). 

The dimensions and the materials (for cast sculpture, also the patinas) may be other than those approved in life by the artist, only when normative, obsolescence or security modifications are unavoidable.

A 3D copy of the sculptural work created and approved by the artist, in life, which reproduces the precise appearance of the work. It may have been produced for exhibition, study, dissemination, or conservation purposes, or to be a commercial product. It may originate in a 3D model created and approved by the artist to be the specific preparatory work of the sculptural work or in a previous sculptural work created and approved by the artist or surmoulage.
